AI drives global trade growth

In short
The DHL Globalisation Tracker, published by DHL and NYU Stern School of Business, reports that global goods trade posted its strongest first-half growth in 15 years in 2026, driven largely by demand for AI-enabling goods such as semiconductors and data-transmission equipment. AI-related goods accounted for 42% of global trade growth in 2025 and 76% in Q1 2026, outweighing the drag from higher US tariffs and disruptions from the Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. East Asia and the Pacific led regional growth at 24%, while US-China decoupling continued without splitting the world economy into competing blocs.
