Researchers developed LACE, an AI system that generates and tests small programs proposing different organizational strategies for complex logistics problems such as assigning tugboats to ships. Tested on 36 benchmark problems and four port-logistics scenarios, LACE scored higher than competing AI methods and produced several complementary strategies rather than one universal method. The work suggests AI can help design specialized optimization techniques that normally require significant engineering effort.
