Benefits of Synthetic Data: AI Training in Aviation Parts Inspection

· Source: businessinsider.com

In short

Aviation manufacturer Safran uses synthetic data generated by software company Loopr AI to train computer-vision models for inspecting cabin parts such as toilet lids, galleys, and passenger seats, where defect detection was previously slow and subject to operator fatigue. By synthetically generating training samples from existing images, the system cut inspection time from 20-30 minutes to 5-10 minutes, achieved a 90.9% defect recall, and boosted throughput by 10% to 15%. After successful pilots, Safran is deploying the technology at its Marysville, Washington, and Santa Maria, California facilities.
