AI Evolves Smarter Rules for Untangling the World’s Container Ports

· Source: bioengineer.org

In short

A new study in Complex & Intelligent Systems uses genetic programming to automatically design relocation rules for the dynamic container relocation problem, in which containers arrive over time and must be retrieved under uncertainty. The evolved rules, expressed as fast symbolic heuristics, were tested against several manually designed rules from the literature across a wide range of dynamic scenarios and significantly outperformed them. The authors argue automated heuristic design offers a practical third path for real-time logistics problems that are too dynamic for full optimisation and too intricate for hand-crafted rules.
