SmartSupplyAI — The weekly briefing on AI in supply chain and logistics

AI agents in supply chain

What AI agents actually do in supply chain: uses in production, prerequisites, limits. The announcements and deployments of the week, sorted and sourced.

An AI agent does more than answer a question: it chains actions across systems (reading an email, checking inventory, placing an order, chasing a carrier) to reach a goal. In supply chain, the first agents in production handle repetitive, well-bounded tasks.

It is the most active topic in our watch, and the one where the gap between announcements and deployments is widest. The recurring questions: what data the agent can access, what it may decide alone, who controls its actions, and how several agents coordinate with each other and with existing ERP, WMS and TMS systems.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an AI agent and an assistant (copilot)?

An assistant suggests, a human executes. An agent itself executes a sequence of actions in the systems, with a degree of autonomy defined in advance.

Which uses are already in production?

Mostly administrative tasks: delivery appointment scheduling, shipment tracking, order and email processing, freight quotes, low-value purchases.

What are the prerequisites?

Reliable and accessible data, clear rules on what the agent may decide alone, and traceability of its actions. Without them, the agent automates the errors too.
