AI and warehouse automation
Mobile robots, order picking, computer vision, Robots-as-a-Service: the news on AI and automation in the warehouse, sorted every week.
The warehouse is where AI is most visible: autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), picking arms, automated sortation, computer vision for inventory counts and quality control. This equipment relies on software that allocates tasks between machines and operators in real time.
Announcements are plentiful, and large-scale deployments must be told apart from pilots. Return on investment depends on volumes, product variety and labor cost; robot rental (Robots-as-a-Service) lowers the entry ticket. Integration with the existing WMS remains the main difficulty.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an AGV and an AMR?
An AGV follows a fixed path (floor tape, markers). An AMR finds its own way around the warehouse with its sensors and recomputes its route when it meets an obstacle, which makes it easier to deploy in an existing site.
Is AI only used for robots?
No. It also optimizes product placement (slotting), order batching, task assignment and workload forecasting to size the teams.
What is Robots-as-a-Service?
A model where robots are rented, often on a usage basis, instead of purchased. It reduces the upfront investment and lets the fleet be adjusted to activity peaks.
