SmartSupplyAI — The weekly briefing on AI in supply chain and logistics

AI for demand forecasting

How AI improves demand forecasting: machine learning, demand sensing, external signals. The latest articles and real-world cases, sorted every week.

Demand forecasting is one of the earliest uses of AI in supply chain, and one of the most mature. Machine learning models complement classical statistical methods by using more signals: promotions, prices, weather, store sales, online trends.

The point is not only to gain a few points of accuracy. A finer, more frequent forecast (demand sensing) lets companies adjust inventory, production and transport earlier. Projects mostly stumble on data quality and on adoption by planners, who need to understand a forecast before they trust it.

Frequently asked questions

Does AI replace statistical forecasting methods?

Rarely. In most deployments, machine learning models are combined with statistical methods, and the best model is selected per product or per horizon. AI helps most on highly variable products, promotions and new items.

What data does AI forecasting need?

At minimum a clean and sufficiently long sales history, then explanatory data: prices, promotions, calendar, past stockouts. External signals (weather, trends) only add value once these foundations are reliable.

What is demand sensing?

A very short-term forecast, recalculated daily or close to it from the most recent signals (point-of-sale data, orders, store inventory), to correct the longer-term plan.
