AI in supply chain: ROI, data and governance

Measuring the return on AI in supply chain, making data reliable, governing models: analysis and recent articles from our watch.

Once the excitement of pilots has passed, three questions decide the fate of an AI project: how much it returns, what data it relies on and who is accountable for it. Surveys published on the subject regularly report a gap between the number of experiments and the number of deployments that deliver a measured result.

The causes cited are rarely technical: incomplete master data, non-standardized processes, no baseline indicator before the project. Governance (who validates a model, how its decisions are monitored, how regulations such as the EU AI Act are met) becomes a topic in its own right as systems gain autonomy.

Frequently asked questions

How do you measure the ROI of an AI project in supply chain?

By setting an operational indicator and its starting value before the project (service level, inventory level, transport cost, time spent), then comparing like for like. Without that baseline, the gain cannot be demonstrated.

Why does data quality always come up?

Because a model learns from the company’s data: wrong item, supplier or lead-time master data produce wrong recommendations, which teams quickly stop following.

What does AI governance cover?

The rules that frame the use of models: who validates them, which decisions they may take alone, how their results are traced and controlled, and how applicable regulations are met.
