S&OP (Sales and Operations Planning) and its extended form, IBP (Integrated Business Planning), align sales, production, procurement and finance on a single plan every month. AI comes in at three points: preparing data and scenarios, detecting gaps between plan and reality, and proposing quantified trade-offs.
The underlying trend is the convergence of planning and execution: instead of a fixed monthly cycle, more frequent replanning triggered by events. Vendors talk about “autonomous” planning; in practice, most companies first automate simple decisions and keep the important trade-offs in the meeting room.
