SmartSupplyAI — The weekly briefing on AI in supply chain and logistics

AI for transport optimization

Routing, carrier selection, arrival times, AI agents in freight, autonomous trucks: the news on AI in freight transport.

Transport accounts for a large share of logistics costs and emissions. AI is used to build routes, select carriers, predict arrival times, fill trucks and, increasingly, automate the administrative work of freight: quotes, appointment scheduling, claims follow-up.

Two movements dominate the news: AI agents at freight forwarders and brokers, handling emails and calls in place of operators, and autonomous vehicles, still limited to certain corridors and closed sites. In both cases, the quality of tracking data determines the results.

Frequently asked questions

What does an AI-enabled TMS do beyond a classic TMS?

It does more than record and track shipments: it suggests the carrier and the mode, anticipates delays from tracking data and recommends corrective actions.

Is route optimization AI?

Historically, it is operations research. AI complements it by estimating travel and delivery times more accurately and by re-optimizing routes during the day.

Where do autonomous trucks stand?

Commercial services exist on certain highway corridors and on closed sites (ports, warehouses, mines). Wider adoption depends on regulation, which varies by country, and on safety evidence.
